Rhinoplasty is a surgery to change the shape, size or structure of the nose. This operation can be done for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of the nose or for medical reasons such as correcting breathing problems or repairing abnormalities caused by injury or congenital defects.
A good candidate for rhinoplasty is someone who is in good general health, has realistic expectations, and is looking to improve the appearance or function of their nose. Candidates should ideally not be smokers, as smoking can interfere with healing. It is also important that the nose is fully developed, which usually happens by 15-16 years for girls and 17-18 years for boys.
There are different types of rhinoplasty: ✔ Cosmetic rhinoplasty: It is done to improve the appearance of the nose. ✔ Functional rhinoplasty: It is done to solve breathing problems and other functional problems. ✔ Reconstructive rhinoplasty: It is done to repair injuries caused by trauma or congenital defects.
Rhinoplasty can be performed with two main techniques: ✔ Closed rhinoplasty: incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. ✔ Open Rhinoplasty: An incision is made in the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) to provide better access to the nasal structures, allowing for more precise work.
Recovery from rhinoplasty varies from person to person, but usually includes the following: ✔ First week: swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose, with a splint or bandage on the nose. ✔ Two weeks: most of the swelling and bruising will subside. ✔ One month: You can return to most normal activities, but avoid vigorous activities. ✔ Six months to a year: Final results are usually visible as the swelling subsides completely.
Like any surgery, rhinoplasty has some risks, including infection, bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring, and dissatisfaction with the results. Choosing a highly experienced surgeon can minimize these risks, and following post-operative care instructions can help with a smooth recovery.
In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, so there is no visible scar. In open rhinoplasty, there is a small scar on the columella, but it usually fades over time and is barely noticeable.
Rhinoplasty usually takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery. However, the duration can vary depending on the extent of the changes made.
Patients usually experience some discomfort after surgery, but severe pain is not common. Pain and discomfort can be managed with prescription medications.
Rhinoplasty results are usually permanent. However, it may take up to a year for the final shape of the nose to be fully defined as the tissues stabilize and heal.
Yes, rhinoplasty can be performed to correct structural problems that cause breathing problems, such as a deviated septum. This type of surgery is known as functional rhinoplasty or septoplasty.
To prepare for rhinoplasty, you should follow your doctor's preoperative instructions, which may include stopping smoking, stopping certain medications, and arranging transportation after the operation. It is also important to discuss any concerns with your surgeon and understand the recovery process and post-operative care needs.
Most people can return to work or school 1 to 2 weeks after surgery, depending on how they feel and the nature of their work or activities. If your job involves vigorous physical activity, you may need more time to recover.
You should avoid wearing glasses on the bridge of your nose for at least 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, as this can affect the healing process.
The cost of rhinoplasty varies depending on various factors such as the experience of the surgeon, the complexity of the surgery and the geographical location.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty is usually not covered by insurance. It is important to check with your insurance and the surgeon's office to understand what is covered.
Choosing the right surgeon is critical to a successful outcome. Look for a board certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in rhinoplasty. Check out before and after photos of our previous patients, read patient reviews, and schedule a consultation to discuss your goals and concerns.
If you are not satisfied with the results of your rhinoplasty, it is important to discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Sometimes, minor adjustments can be made through a non-surgical method. In some cases, it is possible.
