Ophthalmologist

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor specializing in eye and vision care. Unlike optometrists and opticians, ophthalmologists are trained to perform eye exams, diagnose and treat diseases, prescribe medications, and perform surgeries. Their extensive training includes medical school, a residency in ophthalmology, and often additional fellowship training in a subspecialty such as retina, cornea, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, or oculoplastics. Ophthalmologists treat a wide range of conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachments. They are skilled in performing surgeries like cataract extraction, LASIK, corneal transplants, and retinal repairs. In addition to surgical treatments, ophthalmologists prescribe corrective lenses and medications to manage eye diseases. They also conduct research to understand and develop new treatments for vision problems. Their comprehensive approach to eye health ensures that patients receive the highest level of care for maintaining or restoring their vision.
