Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. This procedure is typically performed using a balloon catheter, which is threaded through the arteries to the site of the blockage. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to widen the artery, allowing blood to flow more freely. In many cases, a stent—a small, metal mesh tube—is inserted to keep the artery open and prevent future blockages. Angioplasty is often used to treat conditions like coronary artery disease and to relieve symptoms such as chest pain (angina). It can significantly improve blood flow to the heart and enhance overall heart function, reducing the risk of heart attacks and improving quality of life.
