Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to examine the airways and lungs. It involves the use of a thin, flexible tube called a bronchoscope, which is equipped with a light and camera, allowing the doctor to visualize the inside of the airways. This procedure is commonly used to diagnose a variety of lung conditions, including infections, tumors, inflammation, and blockages. In some cases, a rigid bronchoscope may be used, especially for therapeutic procedures like removing foreign objects or tumors.

During a bronchoscopy, the physician can collect tissue samples (biopsies), perform a lavage to clear the lungs, or take cultures to identify infections. The procedure is also essential for visualizing lesions or abnormalities that may not be visible through imaging tests such as X-rays or CT scans. Advanced techniques like endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) can be integrated into bronchoscopy to sample lymph nodes and deeper structures for conditions like lung cancer.

Bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure with relatively low risks, but patients may experience temporary side effects such as a sore throat or cough. Its versatility makes it a crucial tool in both diagnosing and treating lung conditions, enabling targeted therapies and precise interventions that improve patient outcomes.
