CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting)

CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) is a surgical procedure used to treat severe coronary artery disease (CAD) by improving blood flow to the heart muscle. CAD occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or blocked by plaque, restricting blood flow and potentially leading to chest pain (angina) or heart attacks. CABG aims to bypass these blocked or narrowed arteries using grafts to restore adequate blood flow to the heart.

During the procedure, a surgeon takes a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body, such as the chest, leg, or arm, and grafts it onto the blocked coronary artery. This creates a new pathway for blood to flow around the obstruction. CABG can be performed as a single, double, triple, or quadruple bypass, depending on the number of arteries that need to be bypassed. The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and may require a hospital stay of several days. Recovery involves a period of rehabilitation and lifestyle changes to support heart health and prevent further complications.
