Epidural Injection

Epidural Injection is a common treatment for managing pain that originates from the spine, such as in cases of herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica. This procedure involves injecting a corticosteroid, sometimes combined with a local anesthetic, directly into the epidural space—the area surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots. The primary goal of an epidural injection is to reduce inflammation around the nerves, thus alleviating pain, numbness, or weakness that radiates down the arms or legs.

Epidural injections are typically administered under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to ensure accurate placement of the needle and the medication. The effects of the injection can vary; some patients experience immediate pain relief, while for others, it may take a few days to feel the benefits. Relief can last from a few weeks to several months, depending on the underlying condition and the patient’s response to the treatment. While epidural injections are not a permanent solution, they can provide significant pain relief, allowing patients to participate in physical therapy and other rehabilitative activities that promote long-term recovery. The procedure is minimally invasive, low-risk, and can be repeated if necessary, making it a valuable option for those suffering from chronic spinal pain.
