Lung transplantation is a life-saving procedure for patients with end-stage lung disease who have exhausted other treatment options. Conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension can lead to irreversible lung damage, where the only remaining option is to replace the diseased lungs with healthy donor lungs. Lung transplants can involve one lung or both, depending on the patient’s condition.
Before a lung transplant, patients undergo a thorough evaluation to determine whether they are suitable candidates for the procedure. Factors such as age, overall health, and the presence of other medical conditions are considered. Post-transplant, patients must take immunosuppressive medications to prevent organ rejection, as the body’s immune system will naturally attack the foreign tissue. These medications, along with regular medical monitoring, are critical to the long-term success of the transplant. While lung transplantation can dramatically improve the quality of life for patients with severe lung diseases, it also requires a lifetime commitment to follow-up care and medication to ensure the new lungs function properly.
