Nerve Block

Nerve Block is a targeted pain management technique that involves injecting an anesthetic, and sometimes a corticosteroid, near specific nerves to block pain signals from reaching the brain. Nerve blocks are used to treat various types of pain, including chronic pain in the back, neck, joints, and pain resulting from conditions like arthritis or cancer. The procedure can also be diagnostic, helping physicians identify the precise source of pain and determine the most effective treatment plan.

There are several types of nerve blocks, such as peripheral nerve blocks, which target nerves outside the spinal cord, and sympathetic nerve blocks, which focus on the sympathetic nervous system. The procedure is typically performed under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance to ensure precise needle placement and delivery of the medication. Nerve blocks offer immediate pain relief that can last from a few hours to several months, depending on the type of block used and the individual patient’s response. The benefits of nerve blocks include reducing the need for oral pain medications, minimizing side effects, and improving the patient’s ability to engage in physical therapy and daily activities. They are especially useful for patients with localized pain or those who have not responded to other treatments. In some cases, repeated nerve blocks can lead to long-term pain relief, significantly enhancing the quality of life.
