Parasomnias

Parasomnias are a category of sleep disorders characterized by abnormal behaviors, movements, emotions, perceptions, or dreams that occur while falling asleep, during sleep, or upon waking. These disruptions can significantly impact sleep quality and daily functioning, making it essential to recognize and treat them effectively.

Common types of parasomnias include sleepwalking (somnambulism), night terrors, REM sleep behavior disorder, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, and confusional arousals. Some individuals may experience complex actions during these episodes, such as sitting up, walking, or even engaging in routine activities without being fully conscious. Although these behaviors may seem intentional, the person is typically unaware of them and has little to no memory afterward.

Parasomnias can occur during different stages of the sleep cycle. For instance, night terrors and sleepwalking typically happen during non-REM sleep, while REM sleep behavior disorder occurs during REM sleep and may involve physically acting out vivid dreams.

The causes of parasomnias vary and can include genetics, sleep deprivation, stress, medications, substance use, and underlying neurological or psychiatric conditions. Children are more prone to parasomnias, though adults can be affected, especially when stress or irregular sleep patterns are involved.

Treatment for parasomnias depends on the type and severity. In mild cases, improving sleep hygiene—such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and creating a safe sleep environment—can be sufficient. More severe cases may require cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication, or treatment of an underlying condition.

Recognizing the signs of parasomnias and seeking help from a sleep specialist can lead to better sleep and overall well-being. Early diagnosis and personalized treatment are key to managing this complex group of sleep disorders.
