Pericarditis is the inflammation of the pericardium, the thin, sac-like membrane surrounding the heart. This condition can cause sharp chest pain, which may worsen with deep breathing or lying down, and can be associated with fever, weakness, and difficulty breathing. Pericarditis can result from various causes, including viral infections, bacterial infections, autoimmune diseases, or as a complication of heart surgery or injury. Treatment for pericarditis depends on the underlying cause and severity of the symptoms. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. In cases where pericarditis is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be necessary. Corticosteroids may be used for more severe inflammation or autoimmune-related pericarditis. In some instances, more invasive treatments such as pericardiocentesis, a procedure to drain excess fluid from the pericardial space, may be required. Follow-up care is essential to monitor the condition and prevent recurrence or complications.
