Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is located at the back of the knee and helps control backward movement of the tibia (shinbone). Although less common than ACL injuries, PCL injuries often result from high-impact trauma, such as car accidents or falls, and can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty walking.

In mild cases, treatment for a PCL injury might involve rest, physical therapy, and bracing to allow the ligament to heal naturally. However, for severe tears, surgical reconstruction may be necessary. PCL reconstruction involves replacing the damaged ligament with a graft, similar to ACL surgery. Recovery from PCL surgery typically takes around 6 to 12 months, and physical therapy is critical for restoring function, strength, and range of motion to the knee. PCL injuries can be more challenging to treat than ACL injuries due to the ligament’s location, but with proper care, patients can return to their normal activities or sports.
