Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery encompasses various procedures aimed at correcting vision problems by reshaping the cornea, thereby improving how light is focused on the retina. The most common types of refractive surgery include LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis), PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), and SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction). These procedures are designed to correct conditions such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. LASIK involves creating a thin flap on the cornea and using a laser to reshape the underlying tissue, while PRK reshapes the cornea directly without creating a flap. SMILE is a newer technique that removes a small lenticule of tissue from the cornea through a tiny incision. Refractive surgeries offer a high success rate and rapid recovery times, often reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. Patients should consult with a qualified ophthalmologist to determine the most suitable procedure based on their specific vision needs and eye health.
