Root canal treatment is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected. During the treatment, a dentist or endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp from the tooth’s interior, cleans and disinfects the root canals, and then fills and seals the space.
The procedure typically involves several steps: first, an X-ray is taken to assess the extent of the damage, and local anesthesia is administered to numb the area. The dentist then drills a small access hole in the tooth to remove the pulp and bacteria. After cleaning and shaping the canals, a rubber-like material called gutta-percha is used to fill and seal the canals.
Finally, the tooth is usually restored with a crown or filling to protect it and restore its function. Root canal treatment helps preserve the tooth, prevent further infection, and alleviate pain. With proper care, a tooth that has undergone a root canal can function normally for many years.
