Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing in targeted tissues. Originally developed to break down kidney stones, shockwave therapy has been adapted to treat various musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and muscle strains. The therapy works by directing controlled shockwaves to the affected area, which increases blood flow, reduces pain, and promotes the body’s natural healing response. This treatment is especially beneficial for individuals who have not seen improvement with traditional treatments like medication, physical therapy, or rest.

In a typical shockwave therapy session, a handheld device emits high-energy sound waves to the problem area for about 5 to 10 minutes. Patients may feel some discomfort during the procedure, as the waves create microtrauma in the tissues, encouraging the body to repair itself. One of the notable benefits of shockwave therapy is its ability to accelerate healing without the need for surgery or extended downtime, making it an appealing option for athletes and active individuals. Although results vary, many patients report significant pain reduction and functional improvement after just a few sessions. Shockwave therapy’s effectiveness in treating chronic pain and promoting tissue regeneration has made it a valuable option in orthopedic and sports medicine, offering a faster, non-invasive path to recovery.
