Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia and typically affects older adults. Alzheimer’s is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, which interfere with communication between neurons, ultimately leading to brain cell death. Early symptoms include memory loss, confusion, difficulty in completing familiar tasks, and mood changes. As the disease progresses, patients may lose the ability to communicate, perform daily activities, and recognize loved ones.

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but management focuses on slowing the progression of symptoms and improving quality of life. Treatment usually involves medications such as cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine, which can help manage cognitive symptoms in the early to middle stages of the disease. In addition to medications, cognitive therapy, memory exercises, and social engagement can help maintain cognitive function and delay decline.

Caregivers play an essential role in the management of Alzheimer’s patients, providing support for daily tasks and helping manage behavioral symptoms like agitation, aggression, and wandering. A comprehensive care plan that includes medical treatment, therapy, and caregiver support is essential for enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and helping them maintain independence for as long as possible.
