Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment that utilizes powerful drugs to destroy or inhibit the growth of cancer cells. This treatment is systemic, meaning it affects the entire body as the drugs circulate through the bloodstream. Chemotherapy works by targeting cells that divide rapidly, a hallmark of cancer cells, but it can also affect other fast-growing normal cells, leading to side effects such as nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and an increased risk of infection. The regimen and duration of chemotherapy depend on the type and stage of cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health. Chemotherapy can be used as a primary treatment, or in combination with other therapies such as surgery or radiation therapy. It may also be used to shrink tumors before surgery (neoadjuvant therapy) or to eliminate remaining cancer cells post-surgery (adjuvant therapy). Despite its potential for significant side effects, chemotherapy remains a vital tool in the fight against various types of cancer, offering hope for remission and improved survival rates.
