Diabetic Foot Problems

Diabetic foot problems are one of the most common and serious complications associated with diabetes. High blood sugar levels over time can lead to damage in the nerves and blood vessels, particularly in the feet. This condition, known as diabetic neuropathy, results in reduced sensation, making it difficult for people with diabetes to feel pain, heat, or cold. Consequently, even minor injuries like cuts, blisters, or sores may go unnoticed and can become infected.

In addition to nerve damage, diabetes can impair circulation, slowing the healing process. Poor blood flow to the feet, known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), can make it harder for the body to fight infections. If left untreated, these infections can progress, leading to ulcers, gangrene, and, in severe cases, amputation.

Preventing diabetic foot problems requires consistent management of blood sugar levels and careful foot care. This includes daily foot inspections, proper hygiene, wearing comfortable shoes, and regular visits to a healthcare professional for checkups. Early detection and treatment of foot injuries can prevent complications from escalating. For those with diabetic foot ulcers, advanced wound care, infection management, and sometimes surgery are necessary to promote healing.
