Fundoplication

Fundoplication is a surgical procedure primarily used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernias. The surgery involves wrapping the top of the stomach (fundus) around the lower esophagus to reinforce the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is responsible for preventing stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. This reinforcement helps reduce or eliminate the symptoms of GERD, such as heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing.

The procedure can be performed using traditional open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques, which involve smaller incisions and typically offer quicker recovery times. Fundoplication can also be effective for patients who have not responded well to lifestyle changes or medication. Post-surgery, patients might experience some difficulty swallowing or gas bloating, but these symptoms generally improve over time. Long-term success rates are high, with many patients experiencing significant relief from GERD symptoms and improved quality of life. The decision to undergo fundoplication should be based on a comprehensive evaluation by a gastroenterologist or surgeon specializing in gastrointestinal disorders.
