Ovarian cancer occurs when malignant cells develop in the ovaries, which are part of the female reproductive system. It is one of the most challenging cancers to detect early because it often presents no symptoms in its early stages. When symptoms do appear, they can be vague and may include bloating, pelvic pain, difficulty eating, or frequent urination. By the time ovarian cancer is diagnosed, it has often spread to other parts of the abdomen, making it more difficult to treat.
There are several types of ovarian cancer, with epithelial ovarian cancer being the most common. Treatment typically involves a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery aims to remove the cancerous tissue, including the ovaries and sometimes other nearby organs, depending on how far the cancer has spread. Chemotherapy is used to kill any remaining cancer cells after surgery. In some cases, radiation therapy may also be used. Ovarian cancer research has advanced significantly, and ongoing studies focus on improving early detection, as well as developing new therapies to extend survival rates for patients diagnosed at advanced stages.
