Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a medical treatment that uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy abnormal or diseased tissue. This technique is commonly used for various dermatological conditions, such as removing warts, skin tags, and precancerous skin lesions like actinic keratoses. Cryotherapy can also be applied in urology to treat prostate cancer, in gynecology for cervical dysplasia, and in oncology for certain types of tumors. The procedure is minimally invasive and often performed in an outpatient setting.

During cryotherapy, a substance such as liquid nitrogen or argon gas is applied directly to the targeted tissue using a probe or spray device. The intense cold causes ice crystals to form inside the cells, leading to cell damage and death, effectively eliminating the abnormal tissue. Cryotherapy is favored for its precision, as it can target specific areas without affecting surrounding healthy tissue.

Recovery from cryotherapy is generally quick, with minimal pain and a low risk of infection or scarring. It is considered a safe and effective treatment option for patients seeking less invasive methods for managing skin lesions, localized cancers, or other conditions responsive to freezing temperatures. However, like any medical procedure, it carries some risks, such as temporary pain, swelling, blistering, or changes in skin pigmentation at the treatment site.
