Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that lead to damage of the optic nerve, which is crucial for vision and is often associated with increased pressure inside the eye. It is commonly referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because it typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The condition can result in gradual vision loss and, if untreated, can lead to blindness.

There are several types of glaucoma, with primary open-angle glaucoma being the most common. This type progresses slowly and painlessly, often without noticeable changes in vision until the advanced stages. Angle-closure glaucoma, on the other hand, can occur suddenly and cause severe symptoms such as intense eye pain, nausea, and sudden vision loss, requiring immediate medical attention.

Risk factors for glaucoma include age, family history, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection, especially for individuals with high risk. During an eye exam, ophthalmologists measure intraocular pressure, assess the optic nerve, and perform visual field tests to diagnose glaucoma.

Treatment for glaucoma focuses on lowering intraocular pressure to prevent further damage to the optic nerve. This can be achieved through medications, laser treatments, or surgical procedures. While there is no cure for glaucoma, timely and effective management can help preserve vision and prevent progression. Regular monitoring and adherence to prescribed treatments are essential for managing this chronic condition.
