Stroke (Neurology)

A stroke is a serious neurological condition that occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and essential nutrients. There are two main types of strokes: ischemic, caused by a blood clot that blocks a blood vessel in the brain, and hemorrhagic, caused by the rupture of a blood vessel, leading to bleeding in or around the brain. Strokes can lead to long-term disabilities or even death if not treated promptly.

Symptoms of a stroke often appear suddenly and may include difficulty speaking, weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg (especially on one side of the body), confusion, trouble walking, dizziness, and severe headache. Immediate medical attention is crucial to minimize brain damage and improve the chances of recovery.

Treatment for a stroke depends on its type. For ischemic strokes, clot-busting drugs like tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) are often administered to restore blood flow to the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes, on the other hand, may require surgery to repair blood vessels and relieve pressure on the brain. After the acute phase, stroke rehabilitation becomes critical for helping patients regain lost function, such as mobility, speech, and cognitive abilities.

Prevention is key in reducing stroke risk, and this includes managing high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Early intervention and rehabilitation play a critical role in reducing the long-term impact of a stroke.
